“‘Brave’ Soundtrack Released – Featuring 2 Superb Original Songs Performed by Julie!!”

‘Brave’, as most of you now know, is the 2012 Disney-Pixar epic animated movie which hit cinemas in the USA on 22 June (following the US Premiere in Hollywood-Los Angeles on Monday 18 June).  The official soundtrack to ‘Brave’ was then released in the USA by Walt Disney Records on 19 June.

Disney-Pixar’s epic fantasy adventure harnesses the magic of ancient Scotland, weaving the rich natural setting throughout the story and bringing it to life with sophisticated film-making and extraordinary performances. But it’s the music of ‘Brave’ that ties it all together, elevating the authenticity with a fresh and contemporary approach to Oscar®-nominated composer Patrick Doyle’s score, as well as two original songs performed by lauded Scottish Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis. A third original song plays during the film’s epilogue and is performed by UK singing sensationBirdy with British folk rock band Mumford & Sons. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian.

“The music of ‘Brave’ supports the story, bolstering this epic journey with Merida,” said Andrews. “The music really sets the tone for the film and underscores the time period. We wanted to capture this ancient feel of Scotland and the music really adds another layer of authenticity.”

THE SCORE

Scottish-born Patrick Doyle, only the fourth composer to write a score for a Pixar film, used a variety of native Scottish instruments such as bagpipes, solo fiddle, Celtic harps, flutes and the bodhran. To give the score a contemporary and fresh feel he included original bespoke electronic sounds and electronically treated dulcimer and cimbalom. “I employed many classic Scottish dance rhythms such as reels, jigs and Strathspeys, which not only serve the action but keep it authentic,” said Doyle.

ORIGINAL SONGS

Two new songs performed by Julie are among the film’s musical highlights. “Touch the Sky” with music by Pixar’s own Alex Mandel and lyrics by Mandel and director Mark Andrews, accompanies Merida’s liberating and exhilarating ride through the forest when she is able to escape the confines of castle life. The song “Into the Open Air” with music and lyrics by Mandel, is heard later in the film during a special moment between mother and daughter. “If ever we imagined a singing voice for Merida—the beauty, the clarity, the directness and honesty - Julie embodies that and she’s fantastic,” said producer Katherine Sarafian.

Added Julie “It was great to be invited to record and perform on the soundtrack to ‘Brave’ and particularly to sing the songs which represent the feisty, female lead Merida. I so enjoyed the challenge of adding a dimension of acting to my singing in order to bring Merida’s character and inner feelings to life through song.”

The score is composed by Patrick Doyle. Vocal talents include Julie Fowlis, Birdy, Mumford & Sons, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, and Peigi Barker. Tracks listed below:

“Julie Attending the US Premiere of ‘Brave’ in Hollywood Today!!”

Today is the day (18 June)...........and Julie accompanied by husband Éamon Doorley, is attending the 'red carpet' gala US Premiere of the new Disney-Pixar epic animated 3-D movie ‘Brave’.

The Premiere, which will kick start the 18th Annual Los Angeles Film Festival, is being held in the newly refurbished Dolby Theatre (formerly known as the Kodak Theatre -http://www.kodaktheatre.com) which is the Hollywood home of the Academy Awards (the Oscars and the Grammys, etc) and the 3,400 seater/18,000 sq ft venue will be filled to capacity for this highly anticipated event!!!

Julie’s song 'Tha Mo Ghaol Air Aird A' Chuan' from her debut Album 'mar a tha mo chridhe', featured in the first of many movie trailers for ‘Brave’ which was first broadcast on US TV during and after the Oscars Ceremony on 26 February this year; and although this song does not actually feature in the movie itself, she is delighted and very proud, to be performing 2 new songs within the main soundtrack. “If ever we imagined a singing voice for Merida—the beauty, the clarity, the directness and honesty—Julie embodies that and she’s fantastic,” said producer Katherine Sarafian.

Julie, speaking about her singing role in the film, said “It was great to be invited to record and perform on the soundtrack to ‘Brave’ and particularly to sing the songs which represent the feisty, female lead Merida. I so enjoyed the challenge of adding a dimension of acting to my singing in order to bring Merida’s character and inner feelings to life through song.”

While the US Premiere of ‘Brave’ officially opens the ‘Los Angeles Film Festival’, the European Premiere will, in contrast, be the ‘Closing Night Gala’ event at the ‘Edinburgh International Film Festival 2012’ (http://www.edfilmfest.org.uk) at the Capital’s Festival Theatre at 8.15pm on Saturday 30 June; and Julie will be there of course.   So.......there will be more news to follow related to the Premieres and the movie itself!!

“Superb Videos of Julie Performing During Cape Farewell Trip – Summer 2011 !”

As we reported via the website in full detail, in July 2011 Cape Farewell embarked on its biggest project to date, in partnership with Cove Park: a month-long expedition by boat across the Scottish islands from Oban across the Western Isles of Scotland to Lewis. After eight journeys to the high Arctic and one to the Peruvian Amazon, they wanted to bring the notion and experience of expedition home to the UK, with an exploration of island ecologies and cultures, and of the strategies for sustainable and resilient futures being implemented across the Scottish Western Isles.

The crew of 10 rotated each week, and was made up of island artists, storytellers, film makers, playwrights, architects, designers, musicians, community leaders, social scientists, ecologists, marine biologists, oceanographers, poets, acclaimed Gaelic singers and a Michelin-starred chef.   It was a life changing experience for Julie to voyage around the Outer Hebrides with such a dynamic crew, and to spend time in St Kilda and The Monach Islands especially.

During the trip, 2 superb atmospheric and haunting videos were shot by the expedition’s Matt Wainwright, of Julie performing one song (‘Fraoch à Rònaigh’) and one tune on the whistle (‘Three Island Reels’).  Totally unaccompanied (apart from the sound of the sea!) and with the superb natural acoustics of a cave as her venue, you can view them now by visiting Julie’s YouTube Channel (just a click on the YouTube icon at the top right of the website pages) and you will find them both as the first 2 featured videos.  We hope you enjoy them!!
