“Julie on the High Seas with Cape Farewell Expedition 2011.”

Julie is thrilled to be part of the 'Cape Farewell Expedition 2011' when she joins the ship next week (commencing 1 August) and as previously reported, she will be posting regular updates on her Twitter account before, during (if possible, depending on limited internet access!) and after her week on board, where (weather permitting) she will sail to Uist, The Monach Islands and St Kilda.

The crew of 10 (which has rotated weekly throughout July) is made up of island artists, storytellers, film makers, playwrights, architects, designers, musicians, community leaders, social scientists, ecologists, marine biologists, oceanographers, poets, acclaimed Gaelic singers (one of whom is Julie!) and a Michelin-starred chef.

In 2001 the artist David Buckland created Cape Farewell to instigate a cultural response to climate change. A small team works alongside partners and collaborators at the centre of an ambitious programme of activity with climate science at its core. Cape Farewell has brought together leading artists, writers, scientists, educators and media for a series of expeditions to hot spots of climate change. Together they have mapped, measured and been inspired by this awesome environment and have endeavoured to bring home stories and artworks that tell how a warming planet is impacting on the wilderness and us.

After eight journeys to the high Arctic and one to the Peruvian Amazon, 'the team' have brought the notion and experience of expedition home to the UK, with an exploration of island ecologies and cultures, and of the strategies for sustainable and resilient futures being implemented across the Scottish Western Isles.  In July/August, 'Cape Farewell' embarks on its biggest project yet, in partnership with Cove Park: a month-long expedition by boat across the Scottish Islands; from Oban across the Western Isles of Scotland to Lewis.

We all wish Julie and the Expedition, every success and hope that the weather and sea conditions are favourable to her and her fellow crew members!!!
