Gaelic star Julie true to her roots

Could enchanting songstress Julie Fowlis be the first-ever Scottish Gaelic crossover star? Certainly if the quality of her second album "cuilidh", sung entirely in Gaelic and yet utterly captivating is anything to go by.

As on her debut disc, the songs and tunes are shrouded in the historical folklore of her native Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland. "But when I sing live, people seem to understand the emotion of the songs even though the majority of them can't understand the lyrics at all," she tells me.

"It is an honour to sing these songs that have been so kindly passed to me by my family and friends. I'm lucky, not many folk singers have that sort of chance to go back to the genuine roots of the tunes.

"So it feels to me a little bit like cheating to translate the lyrics on the album sleeve. Also, people have been listening to opera for many years and not needing to understand every word people are singing, so why shouldn't that be the case with traditional folk tunes?"
